Nerve Pain Q & A

What is nerve pain?

Nerve pain or neuralgia is a complex pain condition that affects communication between your sensory nerves and brain. Your nerve pain may develop due to problems in your central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) or your peripheral nervous system.

What are the types of nerve pain?

There are many types of nerve pain. Common types include:

Post-herpetic neuralgia

Post-herpetic neuralgia is a painful condition that may occur after a shingles infection.

Sciatica

Compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve causes sciatica. The cause is often a herniated disc in the lower back.

Trigeminal neuralgia

Trigeminal neuralgia affects the nerves in your face and may cause electric shock-like sensations in your jaw or cheek.

Occipital neuralgia

Occipital neuralgia causes pain at the base of your skull that may radiate along the back of your head.

What are nerve pain symptoms?

With nerve pain, you may experience a shooting, burning, or stabbing sensation that radiates along the path of the affected nerve. Your nerve pain may also cause a sharp, electric shock-like sensation.

Depending on the underlying cause, your neuralgia may also make you more sensitive to outside stimuli, such as temperature (hot and cold) or touch.

How is nerve pain diagnosed?

When you visit Gramercy Pain Center with symptoms of nerve pain, you can expect a thorough evaluation that focuses on finding the source of your pain so you get an accurate diagnosis.

To diagnose nerve pain, your provider asks detailed questions about your symptoms, including when and how they started. They also review your medical history and conduct a physical that may include tests that assess muscle strength, reflexes, and sensitivity.

Gramercy Pain Center may also request various tests to confirm or rule out a diagnosis, such as blood work, imaging tests, or nerve conduction studies.
