The first dinosaur fossils were found in Marlboro, NJ in 1858. Recently, a leg section of a duck billed dinosaur was found. The historic town center of Marlboro New Jersey was the area around School Road and Main Street. This center used to have a post office, two hotels, and a general store. Today, the area is home to a fire station and a Chinese restaurant. There are no longer any of these buildings in the town center. Today, Marlboro is a sprawling, modern suburb, with several neighborhoods that don't have a traditional town center. The township is currently working on developing an official village center, where local businesses and residents can gather and enjoy the benefits of living in an area like this.
The township's government is governed by a Mayor-Council system. The township's leadership positions were changed from Township Council to Mayor-Council system after the Faulkner Act passed in 1952. Marlboro's mayor and council are responsible for tackling issues such as land development, loss of open space, population growth, and property tax issues. The township's previous mayor, Matthew Scannapieco, pleaded guilty to accepting $245,000 from land developer Anthony Spalliero. He also admitted to accepting sexual favors.
