Following orthopedic surgery, pain commonly prevents people from returning to their normal lives. Examples of orthopedic surgery include bone fracture repair, amputation, and joint replacement such as a total knee replacement (TKR, also known as total knee arthroplasty). After these types of surgeries, people often report moderate to severe pain. If this postoperative pain remains uncontrolled, it can last for several months to years. Up to 20 percent of knee replacement patients report pain at one year following surgery.
Traditional treatment options for postoperative pain have included injections, opioids, and other medications. These treatments work for some people, but may not be effective for everyone and can cause side effects that may interfere with people’s daily lives. With opioids and medications, there is also a risk of long-term use which may lead to dependence and/or abuse.
Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is a newer postoperative pain management approach that may be a good alternative to traditional methods.
Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is a post-operative pain management approach that sends mild electrical pulses to the nerves to help reduce pain. The SPRINT® PNS System has been studied extensively for low back pain, shoulder pain, post-amputation pain, and post-operative pain. The device is cleared by the FDA for up to 60 days of use for the management of post-operative pain.
There is an ongoing study using the SPRINT PNS System to treat post-operative pain. The purpose of this study is to determine if the SPRINT PNS System can reduce knee pain, improve function, and reduce the need for pain medications following knee replacement surgery. The study is supported by the US Department of Defense.
This research study is currently enrolling patients and is open to people who have had a total knee replacement and are still experiencing pain.

The SPRINT PNS System is indicated for up to 60 days in the back and/or extremities for: (i) Symptomatic relief of chronic, intractable pain, post-surgical and post-traumatic acute pain; (ii) Symptomatic relief of post-traumatic pain; and (iii) Symptomatic relief of post-operative pain. The SPRINT PNS System is not intended to treat pain in the craniofacial region.
